Operations Manager of White Rock Gymnastics, and an avid volunteer, was honoured with the President's’ Award at the 2020 Sport BC Awards. The award is handed out annually to “volunteers from Sport BC member organizations who represent the spirit of volunteerism and whose dedication, energy and commitment contributed to the development of their sports or organization.”

McBain was nominated for the award by Gymnastics BC, which also named her its volunteer of the year.

“It totally came out of the blue. I didn’t know I was getting it, but absolutely, it was a nice surprise,” said McBain.

She received her award at a March 12, 2020 event at the Vancouver Convention Centre.

‘Amazing’ gymnastics coach honoured.

‘It’s all about the kids’ says White Rock Gymnastics' Geri Henry, after receiving coach-of-year award.

Geri Henry’s dedication to youth gymnastics was rewarded when she was named recreational coach of the year by Gymnastics BC. She received the award Nov. 7, 2015 at an event in Burnaby. Not one to bring attention to herself – “It’s all about the kids,” she says  – the award came as something of a surprise, she admits. She has one mantra in particular that she often repeats: “Success is not something you do, it’s something you are.” “You have to empower them. They’ll say ‘Oh, I can’t do that.’ But you just tell them that of course they can, they can do anything – and then they deliver.”

Though she came to White Rock Gymnastics without any experience in the sport, she was a very active child in Jamaica, playing cricket, soccer and track-and-field, and knows the skills and values gymnastics can teach.

“It’s a foundation for all sports, whether you want to be a hockey player, soccer or baseball player. Gymnastics teaches you so many skills – flexibility and balance, strength.”
